Cerberus Sentinel, a cybersecurity and compliance provider based in Arizona, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Argentinian cybersecurity company RAN Security, with the transaction expected to close later this year. “RAN Security expands our growth strategy in Latin America and adds to our SOC/managed detection and response services,” said David Jemmett, CEO and founder of Cerberus Sentinel. “Cybersecurity requires global capabilities to properly address the security demands of businesses and organizations. RAN Security is an excellent cultural fit with the Cerberus Sentinel family of companies.”
Netskope, a California-based cloud security company, has raised $401 million in convertible notes from investment funds managed by Morgan Stanley Tactical Value, with participation from Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and CPP Investments, CRN reports. The company, most recently valued at $7.5 billion following a $300 million Series H funding round in 2021, says that funding will be used for further development of SASE products, as well as go-to-market strategy.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the creators of the widely known ChatGPT chatbot, OpenAI, are reportedly in talks with potential investors about sales of shares that put the company at a $29 billion valuation, said those familiar with the situation. The tender offer could mean at least $300 million in share sales, with firms Thrive Capital and Founders Fund said to be involved in discussions. No final deal has been reached, and no comment has been made by OpenAI.

The Defense Post reports that the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded a $12 million contract to BlackHorse Solutions, a subsidiary of Parsons, for cybersecurity assessment support. The firm will work on the Signature Management using Operational Knowledge and Environments (SMOKE) program, working to develop tools for automation of planning and execution of threat-emulated cyber infrastructures utilizing data. “Our offensive and defensive cyberspace operations combine leading edge technical innovations, mission planning and automation solutions, cyber threat intelligence, and advanced cyber threat hunting and incident response to protect networks and enhance mission effectiveness,” said Mike Kushin, Parsons’ executive vice president of high consequence missions, in a statement.
Cybersecurity company Trend Micro has established a new subsidiary dedicated to 5G network security advancement, called CTOne. "Safety today doesn't guarantee Safety tomorrow. While the communications technology market is booming, business operations are facing exposure to more complex risks. CTOne enables enterprises to secure private 5G networks against potential cyberattacks and build a high-quality industrial application ecosystem. The Guardian reports that the leadership of five firms linked to Pegasus spyware creator NSO Group are migrating to London. The companies, based in Luxembourg currently, are said to remain in the country, according to a spokesperson. However, there was no denial that the management would come from Britain. The controversial spyware company's headquarters will remain in Israel, as the migration impacts only companies managing some of the group's operations.
Twitter has seen more slashes to its workforce in the last week. The Information reports that 40 advertising data scientists and engineers at the social media giant were laid off last Wednesday. A cut of at least a dozen trust and safety team employees in the blue bird's Dublin and Singapore offices took place Friday, Bloomberg reports. Fortune wrote Saturday that those impacted by Twitter's layoffs in November finally received severance agreements that left the former employees disappointed. Insider reports that the severance packages contained offers of one month of severance pay on the basis that there would be no speaking of the company or lawsuits against it. Musk previously said he would provide three months of severance, but it seems as though he included the two months of "non-working employment," in which the former employees continued to be paid while waiting for the severance. The method of delivery for the payments themselves also had to be confirmed by Twitter to be legitimate, as the email was automatically filtered into multiple spam inboxes for suspected phishing.
Other companies have been reacting similarly to negative trends in the economy. Amazon is laying off 18,000 people, citing overhiring and economic uncertainty as reasoning for the layoffs, Computing wrote last Thursday. The 1.2% of the staff that is affected will be notified by January 18, the BBC reports. Crypto lender Genesis Global Trading laid off 30% of its staff across all departments on Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reports, and is considering filing for bankruptcy. Yahoo Finance reports that Salesforce announced Wednesday plans to cut 10% of its workforce, with CEO Marc Benioff claiming responsibility and citing hiring "too many people leading into this economic downturn," in a statement to employees. Cisco is also reportedly cutting 673 jobs to save money, CRN reports.
