Prudential PLC has acquired 7,948 shares of cloud security and compliance provider Qualys’ stock, Best Stocks reports. Interestingly, both Wolfe Research and JPMorgan Chase & Co appraised Qualys’ stock at “underperform” and “underweight” respectively. However, the outlet reports that Westpark Capital has issued a “buy” rating for the company’s stock, showing retained optimism in Qualys.

The United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has recently launched its Small Business Cybersecurity Community of Interest (COI), Security Intelligence reports. This initiative is intended to aid small businesses in defenses against cyberattacks, with special attention given to ransomware given its pervasive nature in smaller businesses. This community will allow for a space for small companies and their representatives to have “a platform to provide valuable feedback to the NIST Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) and NIST at large. This engagement will help the agency better understand how to serve the unique needs of small organizations.” The COI aims to bring together a diverse array of backgrounds, from companies, to trade associations, to other experts in the field with the goal of better understanding the challenges faced in cybersecurity by small businesses, and intends to provide these businesses with resources to defend cybersecurity assets and overcome cyber challenges.
Keeper Security has expanded into the Asia Pacific (APAC) market, opening a regional headquarters in Tokyo, Security Brief New Zealand reports. The cyber security firm's new location is intended to meet rising cybersecurity demand from Japanese customers, as well as customers across greater Asia. The APAC market’s sales will be spearheaded by Kazukuni Kuroda, among a diverse array of other personnel across sales and marketing functions.
The first quarter of 2023 saw the lowest level of venture investing since the third quarter of 2020, according to a report released by Metacurity. Total venture investments fell to just under $2.5 billion ($2.471 billion), the lowest since 2020’s third quarter, which saw $1.6 billion in investments. This far fall follows uncharacteristically good years in cybersecurity investing; total venture capital spending in 2021 nearly reached $23 billion, with lower, but still notable spending in 2022 at $17.7 billion. The $2.5 billion in 2023’s Q1 deals was under half of the $5,115 in investments in the fourth quarter of last year.
Baby boomers have been retiring at higher rates, Insider reports. The pandemic expedited the process for some younger boomers who chose to retire early, which begun a plunge in workforce growth that is believed will continue for decades. Cybersecurity in particular has been suffering a skills shortage for a long time, which other industries are now seeing spill into their workforce. The “Forever Labor Shortage,” as Insider has dubbed it, may mean an “all-out competition” for workers, and may mean higher salaries in some cases. While it is difficult to not be drawn in by the call of more money, ITWeb reports that the long-term impact of the skills shortage and stress are the biggest challenge facing cybersecurity right now. There are more jobs open than there are people to fill them in cybersecurity, says SVP of content strategy and evangelist at KnowBe4 Africa, Anna Collard. Many cybersecurity pros saw the doubling of their alerts within the last five years, and as a result, are experiencing alert fatigue. Slip-ups can also trigger pointed fingers at security pros, which can cause workplace toxicity. A report shows that nearly 30% of those surveyed working in cyber believed their mental health was getting worse.
“Cyber security is fun,” says Collard. “It is interesting and dynamic. But these benefits are often overshadowed by that sense of dread that something is about to go horribly wrong. Incidents are unexpected, stressful and often leave teams exhausted, and there is no time to rest before the next incident hits. Cyber criminals are very well rewarded for their diligence when it comes to exploiting every vulnerability they can find. Cyber security teams have to chase these vulnerabilities and threats to ensure nothing is left to chance.” Holistic support and a non-toxic work environment are now imperative for security professionals, and will minimize risk of losing talent within the field.
