Telegram CEO arrested in France.
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has been arrested at a French airport on a warrant related to alleged failures to properly moderate the popular messaging app, the BBC reports. Durov was born in Russia but moved to Dubai after refusing to comply with censorship demands from the Russian government. He now holds dual citizenship in France and the UAE. France 24 cites a source as saying Durov was arrested as part of a preliminary investigation by France's OFMIN agency into "fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organised crime, and promotion of terrorism" on Telegram, with Durov accused of failing to take action against these activities.
Telegram said in a statement on X, "Telegram abides by EU laws, including the Digital Services Act — its moderation is within industry standards and constantly improving. Telegram's CEO Pavel Durov has nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe. It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform."
