The US Cyberspace Solarium Commission (CSC) has released a new study recommending that the US should officially designate space as a critical infrastructure sector, and as such should be granted elevated protection against cyberattacks. The authors note that in recent years, space has become increasingly integral to the US economy and military sectors, and as such it should be equipped with stronger cyberdefenses. The report states, “Designating space systems as a U.S. critical infrastructure sector would close current gaps and signal both at home and abroad that space security and resilience is a top priority.” The study goes on to say that NASA should be designated as the sector risk management agency, giving it responsibility for oversight of cyberdefenses for the sector.
The Record notes that before the invasion of Ukraine last year, Russian hackers attacked the Viasat satellite network, a clear indication that space infrastructure has become a target for cybercriminals seeking to disrupt US operations. Last year the US Department of Homeland Security also advised that space should become a new critical infrastructure sector, and that the National Security Council is in the process of revising the presidential directive that determines which sectors receive the critical infrastructure designation.
Decipher adds that Mike Rogers, former congressman and chair of the US House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, notes that disruption isn’t the only concern. “What happens if the information coming down has been corrupted in some way?” Rogers asks. “So your positioning system has you in one place, and the folks who are making the battlefield decisions or sea-born decisions are getting information that’s getting that battlefield, or that ship, in a very different place, because [attackers] have been able to disrupt the information flow and insert packets that lead to bad decisions on both sea and land? It’s a real possibility unfortunately.”
