AI in space.
The process of designing and building spacecraft is undergoing one of the biggest transformations since the commercial space boom began. Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital twins, and cloud-based engineering platforms are redefining how spacecraft are designed, tested, and manufactured. Engineers can now build virtual replicas of spacecraft and simulate missions before hardware is assembled. Further, as satellite constellations continue to expand, AI will provide significant data processing capabilities and autonomous controls.
Together, these technologies are beginning to reshape the economics of the space industry. By reducing the need for physical prototypes, shortening design cycles, and improving workflow efficiency, stakeholders will be able to develop next-generation spacecraft at lower costs.
Recently, the Brookings Institution examined AI’s growing role across the space sector in a report published in January 2026. Brookings found that as satellite constellations continue to expand, AI will play an increasingly important role in processing growing volumes of space-based data. Rather than transmitting every observation back to Earth, AI can prioritize sending relevant information and accelerate analysis while reducing bandwidth requirements.
Additionally, integrating AI into both spacecraft and missions will establish new use cases. Brookings cited how technologies like AI-enabled computer vision will help identify geological features to establish safer landing sites, discover signs of water, and support further planetary/extra-terrestrial discoveries.
Yet the same technologies accelerating innovation are also expanding the sector’s cyber attack surface. As organizations increasingly rely on cloud-based engineering platforms, AI models, and interconnected digital design environments, cybersecurity needs to become a critical consideration long before a spacecraft is in orbit.
The AI cyber challenge.
While AI holds significant promise for the space sector, it also introduces new cybersecurity challenges that organizations must address throughout the spacecraft lifecycle. These risks extend far beyond spacecraft already in orbit.
Organizations must contend with risks ranging from AI-generated design errors and model manipulation to intellectual property theft, compromised engineering environments, and more complex supply chains. As more development occurs with cloud-based engineering platforms, securing the digital infrastructure used to build spacecraft will be just as important as securing the physical platforms themselves.
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) has called for stronger governance around AI-enabled space systems. Its recommendations emphasize protecting data integrity, establishing international standards for AI documentation and transparency, and developing best practices that promote responsible deployment while maintaining human oversight.
While no single framework will address or eliminate every risk, these recommendations provide a foundation for integrating cybersecurity and responsible AI practices into the next generation of space systems. As AI becomes embedded throughout the spacecraft lifecycle, organizations that prioritize secure-by-design principles from the outset will be better positioned to protect both their missions and digital environments.
