I am so full of gratitude and inspiration from the CyberWire's 2022 Women in Cybersecurity event! I hope you do not mind me taking a few sentences to gush about the experiences many of us shared at the International Spy Museum on October 20th. Nearly 300 women and a handful of men gathered in view of the Washington Monument and the US Capitol building for an insightful panel and networking reception. The panel, “The Hidden Impact of Cybersecurity’s Talent Gap on the Cyber-Enabled Community,” was moderated by Simone Petrella of CyberVista (and now N2K Networks, see the announcement of CyberWire and CyberVista merging here), and panelists included Davida Gray of MindPoint Group, Kyla Guru of Bits N’ Bytes Cybersecurity Education, Amy Mushahwar from Alston & Bird, and Jennifer Walsmith from Northrop Grumman. I am so grateful to the panelists for sharing their experiences and insights with our guests! A special thank you to my new colleague from CyberVista, Emily Bradford, for her role in putting the panel together. A recording of the panel is in the works and we will be sure to share that when it's completed. Stay tuned.
The event was supported by companies in the cybersecurity industry that are leaders in support of diversity and the roles of women as leaders and mentors. I hope you all enjoyed our toast by the CyberWire's friend and a woman who's inspired us since our very first reception in 2014, Kathleen Smith! A video of that will be available as well. And, I cannot forget to thank our artist, Marcia Wolfson Ray, who shared her words and creative talents with us all. I hope all who attended like her art piece we chose this year as much as our selection committee did. My final thank you is for our amazing team at the CyberWire! It was truly all hands on deck and I could not have pulled the event off without their help! A special thank you to Eliana White, Gina Johnson, Liz Irvin, and Rachel Gelfand who until last week, made up the women of the CyberWire. We've happily grown by two more on our team, Catherine Murphy and Janene Daly! For a recep of the event including a list of our generous sponsors, please read my colleague, Rachel Gelfand's, story.
We have some great photos of the event in our gallery. You are free to save and share. And, while you are at it, don't forget to mark your calendars for Thursday, October 19, 2023! We are planning to hold our panel and networking reception on that day at the International Spy Museum. Do you have any suggestions for the event? Please contact us! We'd love to hear your thoughts and comments about your experiences.
Did you attend our 2022 event? What was your favorite part about it–the networking, meeting a mentor or mentee, hearing from the panel, getting a print of the event's art for that year? We’d love to hear from you. Tweet us your favorites to @thecyberwire and use the hashtags #womenincyber.
